Brave New World: PMI Virtual Symposium

Today I attended my first "virtual symposium" sponsored by the Project Management Institute. Essentially it was an all day series of webinars for PDU credit. The Flash-based software environment by is well done providing a simulated conference environment with an exhibit hall, networking lounge, presentation room, etc. No technical problems after I learned that Chrome was not supported for the video streaming.

About 2,200 registered. About 1,500 were expected throughout the day (not all at the same time). There were over 800 in the Who's Here at one point when I was there.

Just a few notes from the webinars:

  • Interesting quiz at
  • Put the Lessons Learned document as a line on the RACI chart to make sure it's covered.
  • Idea for an article / presentation: Adapting the PMBOK for small companies.

Made a couple of contacts, but networking will require some practice at these virtual conferences. Random encounters on the exhibit floor were not possible with this particular software. There was a list of people attending with some profile capability, but it was not extensive. I think over time we will all develop more skills with working virtually in environments beyond email / forums / chat. Maybe not as extensive as Second Life, but beyond what I experienced today. I did become more comfortable with the technology as the day went on although my attention span was waning by the last webinar.

Jim De Piante had a very helpful webinar with lots of tips on managing virtual teams. Subsequently I found where he writes blog entries at PMI, so will follow up on that.

Overall a worthwhile day and I'll apply for the PDU credit later this week.

A few screen shots from the symposium software:

Conference Visual Simulation

Exhibit Hall -- only PMI at this one,
but you could imagine vendors joining as more of these are done.

List of sessions. This had only one track, but I would think multiple tracks are possible.

 Networking Lounge (chat)

Who's Here (List of Attendees)

Profile had limited information though you could upload an Avatar (photo).
Most did not upload a custom Avatar or photo (80x80 pixels).

System Check for Online Symposium

One of the best check screens that I've seen for an upcoming PMI Online Symposium:
